What is Headspace?
Headspace is the critical distance between your rifle's breech face and the base of the cartridge when the action is fully closed. Excessive headspace creates a dangerous condition: unsupported brass can rupture during firing, allowing high-pressure gases to escape rearward with potentially catastrophic results.
How the Field Gage Works
Forster manufactures three headspace gages for each cartridge:
- GO Gage: If your rifle closes on this gage, the chamber accepts all SAAMI-specification ammunition safely
- NOGO Gage: If your rifle closes on this gage, headspace may be excessive
- FIELD Gage: If your rifle closes on this gage, the chamber is dangerously oversized and unsafe to fire
