Forster Neck Tension Gage: Essential Brass Inspection

The Neck Tension Gage is a straightforward but invaluable tool for the serious reloader. It allows you to measure the inside diameter of your case necks after sizing—critical information for achieving consistent, reliable ammunition.

How It Works

The tool features four stepped diameters that increase in size toward the handle. Each diameter is clearly etched on the metal body. Simply insert the stepped end into your sized case neck and slide it in until one diameter achieves a slip fit. The etched marking tells you the precise inside neck diameter of that case.

Why Neck Tension Matters

Consistent bullet release depends on proper neck tension. Too tight, and you risk excessive pressure and inconsistent velocities. Too loose, and bullets may shift during handling or firing. This gage helps you find the sweet spot.

Quality Control

Use this tool after case neck sizing and before bullet seating to:

  • Screen and sort brass by inside neck diameter
  • Detect "donuts"—deformation at the neck-shoulder junction that signals problem brass
  • Fine-tune your case preparation for maximum consistency
  • Identify which cases need additional attention or culling

Precision reloading begins with knowing your brass. The Neck Tension Gage gives you that knowledge.
