The Foundation of Safe Reloading

The Wilson Brass Case Gage for .223 Remington is a precision tool that belongs in every serious reloader's workshop. Designed with safety as the paramount concern, this gage allows you to take direct control of your case preparation and sizing process.

What It Does

This single-piece gage performs three critical functions:

  • Checks overall case length to identify when trimming is necessary
  • Measures headspace by comparing fired cases to SAAMI specifications
  • Reveals shoulder setback so you can see exactly how much your sizing die is moving the shoulder

How to Use It

The process is straightforward and repeatable:

  1. Measure a case in as-fired condition and note the headspace reading
  2. Resize the case using your current die setting
  3. Place the resized case back in the gage to measure shoulder setback
  4. Adjust your sizing die accordingly to achieve your desired shoulder position
  5. After sizing, check case length again—brass often lengthens during the process

Why This Matters

Inconsistent headspace and excessive shoulder setback are primary causes of case separation and premature case failure. By using this gage, you eliminate guesswork and establish a repeatable, safe baseline for your reloading process. The gage was invented in 1935 by L.E. Wilson specifically to solve case-separation problems—a problem that remains relevant today.

Important Note

This gage is designed for use with fired cases to establish your full-length sizing baseline. It does not measure body diameters.
