Sierra MatchKing 6.5mm 142-Grain Bullets
The 6.5mm bore has experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity among competitive shooters and rifle enthusiasts. Modern manufacturers now produce quality 6.5x55mm rifles, introducing new generations of shooters to this respected Scandinavian cartridge that has proven itself in both competition and the field.
Performance Characteristics
Sierra's 142-grain MatchKing bullet (#1742) features a longer ogive radius compared to lighter alternatives, resulting in a higher ballistic coefficient. This design translates to superior wind resistance and more consistent long-range performance.
Ideal Applications
These bullets are purpose-built for:
- Competitive Shooting: High Power and Silhouette competition
- Precision Rifle: Target shooting and benchrest applications
- Varmint Hunting: When used at appropriate velocities
Important Considerations
MatchKing bullets are engineered for accuracy, not hunting. Their design prioritizes precision over expansion and are not recommended for most big game hunting applications. Varmint hunters should note that while these bullets are commonly used for varmint work, they may not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities as Sierra's specialized Hornet Blitz or Varminter bullets.
