The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express: A Dangerous Game Classic
Since 1936, the Winchester Model 70 has set the standard by which all other bolt-action rifles are measured. The Safari Express carries forward that legacy with purpose-built features for hunters pursuing dangerous game.
Proven Design and Construction
Receiver and Action
- Forged steel receiver machined from a solid block of steel
- Flat bottom profile provides maximum bedding surface area
- Two-point epoxy bedding (front and rear) ensures stability during firing
- Pre-'64 style Controlled Round Feed with massive claw extractor
- The claw extractor secures approximately one-quarter of the cartridge base, maintaining full control from magazine to chamber through ejection
- Unfired cartridges can be extracted even if not fully chambered—a critical safety feature
Trigger and Safety
- Three-position safety operated conveniently by the firing hand thumb
- M.O.A. Trigger System: the most precise three-lever trigger mechanism available
- Blade-type ejector provides complete control over fired cases
Barrel and Accuracy
- Cold hammer-forged, free-floated barrel for superior accuracy and durability
- Button-rifled for consistent performance
- Recessed target crown protects the muzzle
- 24-inch barrel length balances velocity with handling in the field
Sights and Furniture
- Fully adjustable rear sight for precise field adjustments
- Hooded brass bead front sight for quick target acquisition in low light
- Barrel-mounted front sling swivel for secure carry
- Grade I satin walnut stock with cut checkering and deluxe cheekpiece
- One-piece bottom metal with steel floorplate
- Dual decorative steel crossbolts reinforce the stock
- Matte finished metal surfaces resist glare and corrosion
- Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad manages the substantial recoil of the .458 Win Mag
